New MCP tools help platform teams scale automation safely

Agentic tools are advancing beyond simple code completion to manage complex tasks like running pipelines and triaging work. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) serves as a common interface for these agents to interact with existing tools, expanding automation capabilities. However, increased agent reach introduces governance challenges, forcing platform teams to decide which actions agents can perform autonomously. GitLab addresses this by integrating wide tool access with consistent governance, ensuring that platform engineers can roll out agents with both extensive reach and secure control. GitLab 19.4 enhances agent capabilities by allowing them to execute pipelines, manage merge requests, and triage vulnerabilities. Read-only actions are permitted by default, accelerating routine tasks, while actions involving writes or deletions require reviewer approval. The release significantly expands the GitLab MCP server's toolset to include CI/CD, merge request, work item, vulnerability, and project tools. This expansion allows agents to complete a broader range of end-to-end software lifecycle tasks. Governance for these MCP server tools is consolidated, meaning all agents interacting with GitLab, whether internal or third-party, are managed under a single, consistent control framework. GitLab aims to provide a scalable platform where all agents operate under unified, governed rules, with expanded reach into GitLab's context.
