The iPhone 18 Pro features a new under-display Face ID infrared camera. This advancement has resulted in a smaller permanent cutout for the Dynamic Island. However, the usable space within the Dynamic Island for displaying content has effectively increased. iOS can now draw to the left of the cutout, where the Face ID sensor was previously located. This allows the iPhone 18 Pro to display up to three Live Activities simultaneously, an increase from the previous maximum of two. While this offers more functionality, there is a slight visual compromise noted. The pixels directly above the under-display sensor appear less sharp, particularly with status bar text like the time. This fuzziness is subtle and requires close inspection to notice. Apple has progressively reduced the front-facing display obstruction over the years. The company's long-term goal appears to be a completely uninterrupted, all-display front. The placement of Face ID under the display marks a substantial move towards achieving this objective.
