However, the Trump administration has restricted the full launch, requiring OpenAI to limit access to trusted partners initially. OpenAI has agreed to this short-term measure for broader availability, while pushing back against government pre-launch review processes. They believe such processes hinder access to crucial tools for users and developers. The administration is establishing a framework for benchmarking and assessing new AI models. The GPT–5.6 models are currently available via API and Codex to select partners, with a wider release in ChatGPT and other platforms anticipated soon.
