OpenAI is now offering its Projects feature to free ChatGPT users, a capability previously exclusive to paid subscribers. Projects allow users to organize their AI conversations around specific topics. This feature is more than just a folder, enabling custom instructions and limiting the AI's information access for power users. Free users can now add up to five files to a project, with paid tiers offering more. All users can customize project colors and icons. This move aligns with OpenAI's strategy of gradually releasing paid features to free users. Examples include Deep Research and ChatGPT Voice, which were initially subscriber-only. This approach incentivizes free users to upgrade by offering a limited version of premium functionality. The recently launched GPT-5 model also follows this logic, with stricter usage limits for free users. Projects are currently available on the web and Android app, with iOS support expected soon.
