OpenAI's Sora AI Video App Hits 1 Million Downloads
OpenAI's AI video generation app, Sora, has surpassed one million downloads. Sora's lead, Bill Peebles, announced this significant milestone on X, noting it achieved this faster than ChatGPT. Despite being invite-only and currently limited to the U.S. and Canada, interest in Sora is exceptionally high. The app, released in late September, allows users to generate AI videos using short "cameo" videos of themselves. These cameos can be shared, enabling others to create AI videos incorporating the user's likeness. Although some have criticized Sora for producing low-quality content, its popularity remains undeterred. Sora is currently the leading free app on the Apple App Store. It utilizes OpenAI's Sora 2 model, capable of generating realistic and cinematic videos, including anime styles, with integrated audio. The app personalizes content feeds based on user interactions and includes well-being checks. Designed for social interaction with friends, Sora is invite-only and offers controls for users to manage their feed content. Currently, downloading and using Sora is free, with no restrictions on video generation for subscribers.
