Pinterest’s CEO says you’ll never be able to entirely filter out AI-generated content: ‘Not perfect for any platform’

Pinterest's stock price plummeted after its third-quarter earnings report despite a 17% year-over-year revenue increase. The company met revenue expectations but missed earnings per share estimates and fourth-quarter revenue projections. Pinterest also fell short of sales estimates in the U.S. and Canada and global average revenue per user. The platform has faced criticism for the proliferation of AI-generated content, dubbed "AI slop," leading to user dissatisfaction. Despite user complaints, Pinterest CEO Bill Ready emphasized AI as central to the platform's experience. New generative AI controls were recently rolled out, allowing users to adjust the amount of AI content they see. Global monthly active users increased by 12%, reaching 600 million, with a growing male user base. Pinterest claims its AI-driven advertising platform improved advertiser performance, with a 40% increase in outbound clicks. Ready acknowledged the difficulty of completely identifying AI-generated content on the platform.
