Plex raises subscription prices for the first time in a decade

Plex, a streaming service, is increasing its prices for the first time in ten years. The premium subscription service, Plex Pass, will now cost $7 per month, up from $5, and $70 per year, up from $40. The lifetime pass will increase to $250 from $120. The standard service will remain free, allowing users to set up a simple media server to stream movies and shows. The price changes will take effect on April 29, but users can still purchase a lifetime pass at the original price until then. The company cites rising industry costs as the reason for the increase. Remote streaming will also require a subscription, priced at $2 per month. To accompany the price increases, Plex is introducing new features, including integration with Common Sense Media for parental ratings and reviews, a new server management app, and a refreshed primary playback experience. The platform is also eliminating the mobile unlock fee, which previously limited playback on mobile devices. The price increase comes as the entire streaming industry is raising prices, with many platforms becoming more expensive in recent years.
