Power BI September 2026 Feature Summary
The European Microsoft Fabric + SQL Community Conference in Barcelona highlights numerous Power BI updates this month. Copilot and AI are significantly enhanced with agentic experiences now generally available, allowing developers to delegate tasks. Microsoft 365 Copilot is coming to Power BI in preview, integrating AI directly into the user experience. Power BI data answers are now generally available in Microsoft Copilot Chat, leveraging Fabric IQ for grounded insights. Fabric IQ also integrates into Microsoft 365 Copilot's Cowork feature, keeping data analysis and follow-up actions in one place. GitHub Copilot will offer preview support for building Fabric apps, and report consumption Copilot is enhanced with Fabric IQ. A new control for Copilot access to semantic models is introduced, and a remote Power BI Authoring MCP Server is in preview. Reporting features include a new web report ribbon, live visual sharing in Outlook, and improved controls on Power BI Home. Modeling enhancements include creating and editing DirectQuery semantic models in the service and approximate distinct count for Import and Direct Lake. New data connectivity options include a preview of the Power Query editor and a Microsoft Outlook Mail connector. Mobile updates bring a generally available mobile page indicator and contact details in the info drawer. Developer enhancements include Power BI Projects (PBIP) now being generally available. Several third-party custom visuals have also been highlighted. The old file picker experience in Power BI Desktop is deprecated, with a deadline for updates to ensure continued OneDrive and SharePoint functionality.
