Power BI’s next chapter: The evolution of business intelligence

Power BI is evolving into a platform for building data applications, moving beyond traditional reporting. A new app-building experience in Power BI Desktop, available soon, will allow users to create these applications using natural language, powered by Microsoft Fabric. These apps can accept inputs, write back data, and support operational workflows, enabling users to act on insights. This new capability will be available to Power BI Pro, Premium Per User, and Fabric capacity customers. The semantic layer, a crucial organizational asset with over 22 million Power BI semantic models in use, will be enhanced with semantic views. These views will allow defined metrics and semantics to be reused across Fabric and beyond, keeping them close to the data. Microsoft is also supporting Apache Ossie, a community effort for a vendor-neutral standard for semantic metadata exchange. This collaboration aims to enable reuse of semantic context across different platforms. Fabric IQ in Microsoft Copilot is now generally available, allowing users to ask business questions in Copilot Chat and receive answers grounded in Power BI reports and semantic models. The same Copilot experience is also coming to Copilot in Power BI for richer responses using M365 data. Power BI's future development will continue to be driven by community feedback. Detailed announcements can be found in the Power BI September 2026 monthly roll-up blog.
