Prince Was One of the First Players of The Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail, a classic educational video game, was developed by college students aiming to make history class more engaging. History major Don Rawitsch collaborated with math majors Bill Heinemann and Paul Dillenberger, who had programming skills. They created the initial version to supplement Rawitsch's student teaching. Heinemann and Dillenberger tested early iterations of the game with high school students. Among these students was a young Prince Rogers Nelson. One of Prince's teachers described him to Paul Dillenberger as a gifted musician running his own business. Dillenberger later realized this remarkable student was indeed Prince. The narrative highlights this early connection between the artist and the game's origins. The familiar 1980s version of The Oregon Trail is now accessible online for play. This story is detailed in a feature-length documentary by Gaming Historian.
