ProPublica has appointed Dana Chiueh and Aaron Brezel as its inaugural AI engineering fellows. This initiative is part of ProPublica's involvement in the Lenfest Institute’s AI Collaborative and Fellowship program. The nationwide program, supported by Microsoft and OpenAI, aims to explore AI's responsible integration into newsrooms. ProPublica was one of ten selected news organizations for these two-year fellowships. Funding for ProPublica's fellowships comes from the Lenfest Institute and the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. Ben Werdmuller, ProPublica's senior director of technology, expressed excitement about the fellows' expertise. Chiueh brings experience from the Minnesota Star Tribune and developed the Tipbot tool. Brezel previously served as lead software engineer at the Brown Institute for Media Innovation. He also contributed to The Washington Post's reporting tools team. These fellowships will help ProPublica enhance investigative reporting with AI while upholding its ethical standards and journalistic rigor.
