ProPublica has established a fellowship in honor of David Burnham, a pioneering investigative journalist. Kenneth Morales has been chosen as the first David Burnham-TRAC data fellow. This two-year fellowship will focus on using data to examine government operations and the effect of federal policies. The fellowship is funded by David Sobel and Beth Critchley, who recognized Burnham's dedication to investigative journalism. Morales previously worked as a senior data scientist for the New York State Attorney General's office. His experience includes analyzing data related to various important issues like law enforcement and the pharmaceutical industry. Morales also worked on the office's report regarding fake comments submitted to the FCC. Before this, he researched opioid use during the fentanyl crisis at Johns Hopkins University. ProPublica's senior editor for data and news applications recognizes the importance of this work. Morales expressed his admiration for ProPublica's mission and is excited to contribute his skills.
