Public Preview: Migrate Availability Sets to Virtual Machine Scale Sets

Follow
Azure now offers a public preview, enabling migration from Azure Availability Sets to Virtual Machine Scale Sets with Flexible orchestration. This migration allows users to benefit from increased availability, autoscaling, and zone-level resiliency. The migration process utilizes a step-by-step approach, allowing users full control over the process. Users create a target scale set, validate the existing set, initiate migration, migrate VMs individually, start the VMs, and then clean up the empty availability set. The Azure portal also provides a guided migration experience, simplifying the process. Users can migrate to a regional or zonal Virtual Machine Scale Set, with zonal migration offering the highest resiliency. Zonal migration allows for distribution of VMs across availability zones for increased fault tolerance. Users can migrate VMs individually via Azure CLI, PowerShell, or REST API if they need to maintain application uptime. To begin, users must register for the preview and create a target scale set ready for migration. The migration process provides improved service level agreements compared to availability sets. The service has documentation available for more detailed information on setup and usage.
