Excel is introducing a significant change, allowing multiple values within a single cell. This new feature, currently in Beta Channels for Windows and Mac, enables the creation of lists, arrays in cells, and nested arrays. Lists allow users to store multiple distinct items in one cell, facilitating easier filtering and calculations. Previously, users often tried to pack multiple values into a single cell manually. These new list capabilities will keep data separate within a cell while still being individually accessible. Arrays can now also exist natively within cells, whether as static values or formula outputs. Users can "wrap" spilling formulas with braces to keep their entire array result contained within one cell. Nested arrays allow for arrays within arrays, enabling more complex data structures. Four new functions—FLATTEN, HAS, HASANY, and HASALL—have been added to assist with array manipulation and querying. These advancements unlock new possibilities for spreadsheet design and data handling. Compatibility Version 3 is required for most nested array calculations. However, some existing formulas may behave differently in this new version. Several limitations exist for these preview features, including conditional formatting, data validation, charts, PivotTables, Power Query, and Find & Replace. They are rolling out to specific Beta Channel versions of Excel for Windows and Mac.
