Random access memories: Inside the time-shifting narrative of The Wreck

The Wreck is a game that defies categorization, blending elements of visual novels, interactive stories, and playable films. Florent Maurin, the game's co-writer, designer, and producer, aims to expand the definition of what a game can be. The Wreck tells the story of a writer who must make a life-changing decision involving her mother after a car accident. The narrative is fragmented, with players viewing scenes from different perspectives, which can be replayed multiple times. Maurin, a former children's journalist, wanted to challenge the lack of realism in video games and share real stories about real people. The game was inspired by Maurin's own experience, which he initially found too intense to work on. Art director Alexandre Grilletta, encouraged Maurin to take creative control, which led to the game's unique mechanics. The story is split into two parts, with the second part featuring dreamlike, inventive scenes that can fast-forward or rewind. The game's design focuses on creating a "moving and mature" story, with items and memories that carry deeper significance. Throughout development, the team prioritized immersion and storytelling over gamification, resulting in a unique and impactful experience.
