It originated from a medieval game involving selecting verses from a "Ragman roll." This roll was associated with a fictional king. Initially, "ragman" and "ragman roll" meant a list or catalog. While they faded from written use, "ragman roll" survived orally. By the 18th century, it reappeared in writing as "rigmarole." Its early meaning was a series of nonsensical statements. In the mid-19th century, its definition expanded. It then came to describe complicated and tiring procedures.
