Roche receives CE mark for new Elecsys NfL blood test to detect neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis

Roche announced CE mark approval for its Elecsys NfL blood test intended for detecting neuroinflammation in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients. This test monitors neuroaxonal damage by measuring neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels in a simple blood sample. The test offers a less invasive alternative to traditional methods like MRI for monitoring MS disease activity. Elecsys NfL provides insights into neuroinflammatory activity, potentially enabling earlier clinical intervention and better disease management. This technology complements routine assessments and could improve access to regular monitoring for more patients. The Elecsys NfL test yields consistent results and can be performed locally, reducing patient travel. NfL, a protein released during nerve cell injury, serves as a sensitive indicator of neuroaxonal damage. The Elecsys NfL test offers a standardised method for consistent monitoring. Roche aims to advance diagnostics and treatments for people with neurological disorders, including MS.
