Rooms at the top: How this ADA-winning team built a title that defies description

Jason Toff, CEO of Things, Inc., describes his Apple Design Award-winning creation, Rooms, as a game, app, toy, and social network all in one. Rooms is a collection of user-generated 3D spaces where users can create anything they like using voxel decorations, items, pets, and avatars. The community element is strong, with users creating quirky games, tranquil havens, and clever ideas, and even sharing their underlying code for customization. Toff and his cofounders drew inspiration from childhood experiences, such as playing with Legos, to create something that is both creative and accessible to users of all ages. The team used voxels to make the experience more approachable and familiar, and to lower the bar for 3D modeling. Rooms launched as a web-based app in 2023 and gained traction through word of mouth and a viral video, leading to the development of a mobile app. Today, most users are on mobile, where they spend a significant amount of time editing and creating rooms. The social aspect of Rooms is strong, with users creating and sharing items, and even adding new effects to make their creations come alive. The team rebuilt their own offices in Rooms, showcasing the app's capabilities. With over 10,000 items in the Rooms library, the team is proud of what they've created, and users are enjoying the freedom to explore and create in this digital playground.
