Rotten Tomatoes and Fandango have introduced a "Verified Hot" rating for movie reviews. This rating is only given to movies that receive an audience score above 90% and are verified by users who bought tickets through Fandango. The goal is to filter out biased ratings and ensure that reviews come from actual moviegoers. Rotten Tomatoes is also expanding its Popcornmeter designations, labeling movies with audience scores above 60% as "Hot" and those below as "Stale."
The "Certified Fresh" badge for movies with strong critic scores has been around for a while, and in 2020, Rotten Tomatoes introduced a "Top Critics" feature to filter out unreliable reviews. While anyone can rate movies on Rotten Tomatoes, users can now filter out reviews from those who are not verified. To ensure accuracy, the Popcornmeter and Tomatometer scores now require a minimum number of reviews based on a film's projected domestic box office forecast. This means that movies with a lower projected box office may need fewer reviews to be considered for a score. A complete list of "Verified Hot" films is available online.
