Samsung plans to mass produce 256GB RAM that supports key tech that will take AI to next level — CXL-enabled DRAM will expand computing and machine learning capabilities but at a premium
Computer Express Link (CXL) enhances CPU-GPU interactions with memory and accelerators, standardizing device communication, reducing delays, and boosting system performance, crucial for AI and other data-intensive applications. Samsung is advancing its CXL initiatives, with plans to mass-produce 256 GB DRAM supporting CXL 2.0 by year's end, anticipating a market surge in the second half and explosive growth by 2028. Samsung projects an eight to tenfold increase in memory capacity per server with CXL, significantly enhancing computational power. The CXL 2.0 DRAM, released in May 2023, features memory pooling for efficient resource allocation. Competitors like Micron and SK Hynix are also developing CXL memory, but Samsung, as the sole memory maker on the CXL consortium board, aims to expand the ecosystem through industry partnerships. Samsung has invested over a decade in developing high-quality CXL and is currently testing its products for performance verification with partners.
