In their Editorial “Rewiring science diplomacy” (21 August, 10.1126/science.aeb4815), V. C. Turekian and P. Gluckman argue that science diplomacy efforts must include a transactional approach to remain relevant and suggest that advancing national interest is a new feature of science diplomacy. We disagree.
