Scientists Completed a Toxicity Report on This Forever Chemical. The EPA Hasn’t Released It.

Scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency completed a report on the toxicity of PFNA, a "forever chemical" found in the drinking water of millions. The PFNA assessment identified risks such as lower birth weights and potential damage to liver and male reproductive systems based on animal evidence. This report is crucial for setting cleanup limits for PFNA contamination and removing it from drinking water. However, the finalized report has been delayed for months, raising concerns about potential alterations or non-release by the Trump administration. Internal documents and scientists familiar with the assessment confirm it was ready for publication in April. A draft of the report faced industry objections, and the final version, which included the same crucial calculations, was completed before the EPA announced its intention to reconsider drinking water limits on PFNA and other similar chemicals. Releasing this assessment could undermine efforts to roll back drinking water standards, as it provides strong scientific justification for their necessity. PFNA is a hazardous chemical that has been phased out by agreement and found in drinking water across many states, prompting local governments to seek cost recovery for cleanup from companies involved. Solvay Specialty Polymers, for instance, agreed to a significant settlement and cleanup for contamination at a New Jersey site. This company, along with its successor Syensqo Specialty Polymers, has reportedly engaged in lobbying efforts to influence EPA regulations and the use of the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) program's assessments. The IRIS program, designed to provide reliable information on pollutants, has seen its scientific staff decimated and its operations hindered, according to former employees. Despite assurances from the EPA, the fate of the IRIS program and its rigorous scientific assessments remains uncertain, mirroring a broader trend of regulatory rollbacks and a perceived betrayal of its public health mission.
