Unlike in animals, the role of signal peptide peptidases (SPPs) in the plant endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response remains poorly understood. Here, the authors show that the SPP-like proteases OsSPPL1 and OsSPPL2 promote ER-associated protein degradation and enhance heat stress tolerance in rice.
