Sony has shipped a total of 92.2 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally. The recent holiday season saw a decrease in PS5 sales compared to the previous year. Specifically, Sony shipped 8 million PS5s in the third quarter, a 16% decrease from the previous year. Despite the hardware sales dip, the gaming division saw increased profits. This profit increase was driven by strong software sales and a favorable yen exchange rate. Software sales were strong, with 97.2 million games sold this year, digital sales reaching 76%. PlayStation Network also hit a record 132 million monthly active users. Anticipated new game releases include Resident Evil Requiem, Avowed, and Bungie’s Marathon. The decline in PS5 sales prompts questions about the timing of the next-generation console, the PS6. Analysts suggest the PS5 may have a longer lifecycle than its predecessor, the PS4. The PS6 could potentially offer significantly improved performance, with performance potentially tripling that of the PS5.
