Star Trek: Starfleet Academy deftly balances teen drama with intergalactic intrigue

Star Trek is currently in a precarious position with Starfleet Academy being the only project with a guaranteed future after a contraction of shows. This new series, set in the 32nd century, focuses on young cadets at the Starfleet Academy and is seen by some as "CW Trek" due to its younger cast. As a Discovery spinoff, it inherits some of its precursor's traits, including plot threads about rebuilding the Federation. The distant future setting allows for more creative storytelling, like involving freshmen in diplomacy and featuring diverse alien species in Starfleet. Though Sylvia Tilly is no longer a regular, Jett Reno and Admiral Vance reprise their roles, and The Doctor from Voyager makes a welcome return as a hologram. The cast is bolstered by new characters and acclaimed actors like Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti. Filmed on location in Ontario and at Pinewood Studios in Toronto, the show boasts impressive sets and visual effects, suggesting a substantial budget. This high cost raises questions about Paramount's investment, especially after canceling other Star Trek series. Ultimately, Starfleet Academy carries the weight of determining the future of Star Trek, and despite the pressure, it appears to be meeting the challenge.
