States Sue Trump Admin Over Termination Of Funding For EV Charging Stations

A coalition of 16 states and the District of Columbia is suing the Trump administration. The lawsuit alleges the administration is illegally withholding billions of dollars in federal funding for electric vehicle charging stations. This funding was approved by Congress through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The $5 billion NEVI program, designed to expand EV infrastructure, is the center of the dispute. President Trump's executive order paused the funding, citing concerns about regulations and energy resources. The Federal Highway Administration subsequently suspended fund commitments and rescinded state plan approvals. The lawsuit claims these actions violate the Administrative Procedure Act and other legal principles. The states argue the withheld funds are crucial for their environmental and transportation programs. They are seeking court orders to release the funds and halt the administration's actions. California's Governor and Attorney General have criticized the move, emphasizing its impact on EV accessibility and green economies. Other states, including Arizona, Delaware, and Illinois, are also involved in the lawsuit. The Department of Transportation, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and Federal Highway Administration Administrator Gloria Shepherd are named as defendants.
