A Microsoft Surface Pro 8, previously fully functional, experienced a small Coca-Cola spill around its Type Cover connector. The affected area was immediately cleaned, and no liquid reached the ports, vents, or display. Despite this, the device remained connected to its charger for three hours with the keyboard attached. The following morning, the device would only power on when connected to AC power. Upon investigation, liquid was found around the Type Cover connector, though not on the ports. The device booted normally and reached the Windows login screen, but consistently shut down abruptly after loading the desktop. This shutdown did not occur during UEFI or POST. Subsequently, a BitLocker recovery prompt appeared, and after entering the correct key, the system booted into Windows before shutting down again post-desktop load. The device is currently powered off with no repairs attempted. The observed behavior suggests potential issues with power delivery, the embedded controller, or internal board instability, rather than a failure of the SSD, display, or CPU. The failure appears load-dependent and occurs after the operating system loads, indicating a possible recoverable hardware condition or a non-economical repair. Given the described failure pattern, replacement may be recommended by Microsoft over repair.
