Mechanosensitive channels in bacteria provide protection against hypoosmotic shock. Here, the authors use cryo-electron microscopy to reveal the gating mechanism of MscS-like channel EcMscM, showing that the conformations of the transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains are coupled.
