In the mid-1970s, Mike Mandel embarked on a unique cross-country journey to photograph prominent photographers. He treated these artists, including Imogen Cunningham, Ed Ruscha, William Eggleston, and Ansel Adams, as if they were baseball players. Mandel's project resulted in a collection of 134 "Baseball-Photographer" images. He packaged these images into sets of ten, accompanied by bubble gum, mimicking baseball card distribution. This packaging strategy encouraged collectors to trade cards to complete their sets. Mandel traveled approximately 14,000 miles, visiting about 150 photographic figures. He brought along baseball equipment such as caps, gloves, balls, a bat, and protective gear for the shoots. The reverse side of each card was designed for the photographers to fill in personal data, mirroring baseball card statistics. This data included details like their favorite camera, developer, film, height, and weight. The bubble gum for the project was a donation from Topps, the famous baseball card company.
