Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to include a variable-aperture camera system. This feature, which is new to iPhones, controls the amount of light entering the lens mechanically. Unlike current iPhones that rely on software adjustments, a variable aperture works like the iris of an eye, opening and closing. The most noticeable benefit for users will likely be smoother video recording in bright outdoor conditions. This is because the camera can reduce light by narrowing the aperture instead of drastically increasing shutter speed. Consequently, motion in videos should appear more natural with less jerkiness. Photos taken in good lighting may also appear sharper, particularly at the edges. The variable aperture could also improve the realism of Portrait Mode's bokeh effect, making it look less computationally generated. It remains uncertain whether users will manually control the aperture or if it will adjust automatically.
