The May 2024 Security Update Review

Adobe and Microsoft have released their monthly security patches, addressing a total of 63 vulnerabilities in various products. Apple also released updates for macOS and iOS, including a fix for a critical memory corruption issue in RTKit. Adobe's patch for Acrobat and Reader addresses multiple critical vulnerabilities often used by malware. Microsoft's release includes a Critical-rated vulnerability in Windows DWM Core Library that allows attackers to gain system privileges. The patch also addresses a publicly known bug in Microsoft SharePoint Server that allows information disclosure. Other notable patches include fixes for bugs in Windows Search Service, Windows Mark of the Web security feature, and Microsoft Excel. Microsoft has not yet released patches for vulnerabilities reported at Pwn2Own Vancouver, unlike Apple and VMware. The releases for both Adobe and Microsoft include vulnerabilities that are currently being exploited, highlighting the importance of promptly installing the updates.
