Nicholas Rougeux has created a complete digital edition of William Jardine’s 40-volume natural history series. This ambitious project involved restoring over 1300 illustrations, which are now presented in fantastic quality. The original series, published in the early-to-mid 19th century, significantly democratized natural history by being affordable and portable. Each book, measuring only 4 by 6 inches and costing six shillings, made the study accessible compared to larger, more expensive works. This affordability led to immense popularity, with estimates suggesting at least 400,000 copies were sold. Rougeux's own research for the project included creating a custom K’nex rig to scan a physical biography of Jardine. He also digitized another rare biography by building a makeshift scanning setup with his phone. The digital edition makes these historical illustrations readily available. Additionally, Rougeux is offering posters and a bound volume of all the restored illustrations for purchase.
