The Next Chapter of Microsoft Teams in Virtualized Environments

Microsoft is retiring the legacy WebRTC-based VDI optimization for Microsoft Teams, moving to a new architecture called SlimCore. This shift, driven by customer feedback, addresses feature gaps and operational complexities present in the older system. The new optimization, built on the same media engine as the native Teams client, offers improved performance and a wider range of features. Key benefits include faster call setup, better diagnostics, and enhanced monitoring capabilities within the Teams Admin Center and Call Quality Dashboard. The transition impacts Windows-based endpoints connecting to Citrix and Azure Virtual Desktop environments. WebRTC-based optimization will be unsupported, then unavailable by early 2027. IT teams are provided with a quickstart checklist to facilitate the migration process. A Best Practice Configurations dashboard helps administrators track adoption and identify unoptimized users. Microsoft is expanding support to other platforms, including Omnissa and Amazon WorkSpaces. This change aims to deliver a consistent and improved collaboration experience within virtualized environments.
