The real data revolution hasn’t happened yet

The Gartner Hype Cycle helps track emerging technologies, including big data, which was removed from the cycle in 2015. Despite its widespread adoption, big data's effectiveness is still limited due to inadequate infrastructure, particularly hardware. The software for managing and analyzing data is robust, but it relies on traditional central processing units (CPUs) that are not well-suited for parallel processing. This creates inefficiencies and limits the potential of big data. However, accelerated computing, which uses specialized hardware like graphics processing units (GPUs), is changing this. GPUs are ideal for parallel processing and can dramatically speed up large-scale data operations. Despite emerging around the same time as big data, GPUs haven't become standard in enterprise data infrastructure due to limited cloud access and perceived complexity. However, these barriers have largely fallen, and affordable access to GPUs is now available. The increased adoption of accelerated computing will enable companies to run complex data operations quickly and cheaply, leading to a true big data revolution. This will enable businesses to make better decisions, experiment with new applications, and shift the value of data from collection to usage.
