The Siren Song of Sustainability: The Theocratic Trifecta's Third Leg!

Corporate sustainability has become a significant part of business discussions in the last two decades, focusing on integrating social, environmental, ethical, consumer, and human rights concerns into business strategies and operations. It is centered around planet sustainability, with varying motivations for businesses to act on this front. Corporate sustainability officers (CSOs) have emerged as key figures in this movement, but their roles vary widely. Some CSOs provide long-term vision and guidance, acting as Jedi-like figures. Others serve as corporate consciences, similar to Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio. A few are essentially marketing fronts, selling actions as beneficial for the planet even when they are not. Lastly, some CSOs aim to ensure the company's longevity, akin to ancient Egyptian embalmers promising everlasting life. The concept of sustainability has evolved over time, with a surge in articles and research on the topic. Despite this, there is no clear consensus on what a CSO does or should do.
