The Windows 95 start-up chime has been added to the Library of Congress

The National Recording Registry's 2025 inductees will include culturally significant sounds, preserving them at the Library of Congress. Librarian Carla Hayden emphasized the registry reflects America's diverse history and culture through audio treasures. The iconic Microsoft Windows 95 reboot chime, composed by Brian Eno, will be preserved for its representation of technological progress. The Minecraft soundtrack, Volume Alpha by C418, also joins the registry, marking the second gaming soundtrack to be inducted. It follows Super Mario Bros. theme which was inducted in 2023. The selection of Minecraft highlights the impact of gaming on modern culture. The Windows 95 chime was nearly twice as long as requested, but still chosen to convey welcome and progress. Other notable inductees include the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton and Miles Davis' Bitches Brew. Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" is another addition, showcasing the registry's broad musical range. These diverse selections reflect the breadth of American audio heritage.
