Threads Now Has DMs, But They’re Not Encrypted and, Contrary to Reports, Not Yet Available on the Web
Threads' direct messaging feature is currently available to users 18 and older on Android, iOS, and the web. Initially, it only supports one-on-one conversations. Future updates will allow users to control who can message them, including non-followers. A message request folder, similar to X, is also planned. Threads is developing group messaging and inbox filters. Despite claims of robust privacy, Threads will not support end-to-end encryption for its messaging. The author also experienced difficulty accessing DMs on the Threads web app, despite reports of its availability. This suggests potential A/B testing or early rollouts affecting user experience.
