TikTok is adding Footnotes, its take on Community Notes

TikTok is launching "Footnotes," a crowd-sourced fact-checking feature similar to X's Community Notes, to provide context to videos. This feature allows users to add helpful details to videos, sourced from other videos or external websites. Unlike Meta's approach, TikTok is not changing its moderation policies or fact-checking partnerships with this update. Footnotes won't influence a video's visibility or algorithmic ranking on the "For You" page. TikTok will use its own algorithm for Footnotes, drawing inspiration from X's consensus-driven ranking system. Contributors, aged 18+ with established accounts, will write and rate notes, with a launch timeframe for public visibility in the US. The rollout is happening despite uncertainty about TikTok's future in the US. TikTok is awaiting a deal that will secure its presence in the country, having received an extension from the US government. The White House is reportedly considering a deal involving TikTok's existing US investors. The implementation of Footnotes reflects TikTok's effort to address misinformation and maintain transparency. The company has not provided details on a global Footnotes rollout.
