Tomb of the Nue in Osaka, Japan

Japanese mythology features the Nue, a yokai monster with a macaque head, raccoon dog body, tiger limbs, and snake tail. Its distinctive cry is described as "hyo-hyo." The Heike Monogatari recounts the Nue terrorizing the Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1153. Minamoto no Yorimasa, a skilled archer, is credited with killing the creature. Three locations claim to be the Nue's burial site, known as Nuezuka. The Osaka Nuezuka, rebuilt in 1957, is treated almost like a shrine. Locals maintain the site to appease the Nue's spirit. The Port of Osaka uniquely incorporated the Nue into its coat of arms in 1980. A plaque near the Osaka monument displays this design. The differing locations of the tomb highlight the enduring legend of the Nue.
