Too Many Red Flags

Remco, a recent university graduate, accepted a job at Conglomcorp, a company with a healthy financial position and a large list of clients. Despite having a bad gut feeling during the interview, Remco ignored his misgivings and took the job. During orientation, he learned that the company had recently fired 50% of its workforce, which raised concerns. During onboarding, Remco discovered that the company's Java application had a "Garbage Collection" button that simply called System.gc(), a useless feature. As he delved deeper into the codebase, Remco found a mess of spaghetti code with numerous bugs, some of which had been unresolved for over 7 years. He was tasked with fixing the oldest bugs, but soon realized that each feature in the application was implemented differently and poorly. When he asked his senior developer, Lars, for guidance, Lars was unhelpful and seemed more interested in the "Garbage Collection" button. Remco eventually left the company, which is still in operation, although it's unclear if they still have the "Garbage Collection" button. Remco's experience highlights the importance of trusting one's intuition and being cautious of red flags in the workplace.
