Top DOJ Official Resigns After Attempted Reassignment

Corey Amundson, the former chief of the US Department of Justice's Public Integrity Section, has resigned after being reassigned to work on immigration issues. Amundson had been in charge of the section for years before the Trump administration's recent reassignment. In his resignation letter to Acting Attorney General James McHenry, Amundson expressed his honor and gratitude for serving the country and the department for 23 years. Amundson started working for the DOJ in 2002 and was tapped to become chief of the Public Integrity Section in 2019. He was involved in overseeing public corruption and other politically sensitive investigations, including cases against Rep. Henry Cuellar and former Rep. George Santos. Amundson's resignation comes after he was reassigned to a new Sanctuary City Working Group, along with other career officials who had involvement in the Trump cases. The reassignments and terminations of officials who worked on special counsel Jack Smith's team have drawn scrutiny from Democrats, who expressed concern about the treatment of career prosecutors. The moves have been criticized for contradicting Trump's pledges to maintain a merit-based system for government employment. Amundson's resignation letter did not mention his section's role in the Trump cases, but cited other high-profile cases he helped oversee. The Department of Justice has not responded to requests for comment on Amundson's resignation.
