The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to allow it to resume dismantling the US Department of Education, following a lower court's order to halt the process. A federal district court had issued an injunction blocking the dismantling, and directing the government to rehire some laid-off employees. The Solicitor General argued that the injunction subjects the Executive Branch to judicial micromanagement of its day-to-day operations. President Donald Trump had campaigned on shutting down the Department of Education, and signed an executive order to close the agency on March 20. The executive order stated that the department does not educate anyone and maintains a costly public relations office. A US District Judge had ordered the government to rehire about 1,400 laid-off employees and reverse other actions aimed at downsizing the department. The judge argued that the federal government has played a crucial role in education for over 150 years, and that the department's role in education cannot be understated. The Department of Education oversees the federal student loan system, performs research, distributes federal funds, and enforces compliance with federal laws. The judge believed that the Trump administration's true intention is to dismantle the department without obtaining the required congressional approval. The Trump administration's request to the Supreme Court is an attempt to override the lower court's order and proceed with dismantling the Department of Education.
