Daring Fireball By John Gruber

Turns Out, Since 2023, You Can Use WhatsApp Across Multiple Phones

WhatsApp introduced the ability to use one account across multiple devices, maintaining privacy and security. Users can now link their phone to up to four additional devices, like web browsers, tablets, and other phones. Each linked phone connects independently with end-to-end encryption. Inactivity on the primary device logs out all companion devices automatically. The author notes that secondary phones can be used as linked devices, a feature added two years ago. However, Meta has seemingly withheld a ready-to-go WhatsApp iPad version, possibly as leverage in negotiations with Apple. Similarly, an iPad version of Instagram has been held back. This might be changing, potentially leading to an Instagram for iPad announcement. Signing out of WhatsApp on the primary phone to set it up as a linked device requires deleting and reinstalling the app, which is an unusual design.
