Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has fined 4chan £20,000 for failing to provide requested information under the Online Safety Act of 2023. This marks Ofcom's first fine issued under the new law designed to protect children from harmful online content. 4chan ignored Ofcom's requests regarding its illegal harms risk assessment and global revenue details. The investigation into 4chan was launched in June following complaints about illegal content found on the platform. 4chan previously filed a lawsuit against Ofcom, claiming the Act infringes on American freedom of speech. The Online Safety Act prompts websites like Reddit and X to implement age verification. Additional penalties of £100 per day will be added until 4chan complies with Ofcom's demands. Ofcom also found "serious compliance concerns" with two file-sharing services related to CSAM. They now are using an automated tool to remove child sexual abuse material. Four other file-sharing services geoblocked UK access to avoid investigation, resulting in case closures.
