Visualization of protein organization with ångström localization precision is limited by rapid photobleaching of conventional fluorophores. We compositionally engineered upconverting nanoparticles to blink spontaneously and indefinitely, enabling two-colour bio-imaging with sub-ångström localization precision using a single near-infrared excitation source.
