Updates for apps in the European Union
The European Commission has required Apple to make changes under the Digital Markets Act, affecting the App Store in the European Union. Apple is introducing updated terms allowing developers to communicate and promote offers for digital goods or services outside the App Store. These offers can be accessed through a website, alternative app marketplace, or another app. Developers will be subject to new business terms, including an initial acquisition fee, store services fee, and Core Technology Commission (CTC). The CTC reflects the value Apple provides to developers through its tools and services. Music streaming apps can use these options under the Music Streaming Services Entitlement. By January 1, 2026, Apple will transition to a single business model in the EU, replacing the Core Technology Fee with the CTC. Apps currently under the Alternative Terms Addendum will continue to be subject to the CTF until the transition is fully implemented. Apple is also updating the user experience in the EU, allowing users to install alternative marketplaces or apps from a developer's website. An API will be provided later this year, enabling developers to initiate downloads of alternatively distributed apps from within their app.
