Updates to the Android XR SDK: Introducing Developer Preview 4
Android has launched Developer Preview 4 of its XR SDK, focusing on cross-device development for various XR form factors. The platform is renaming form factors for clarity, such as "audio glasses" and "display glasses." This release includes updates to enhance immersive experiences on headsets and streamline augmented reality creation for glasses. Core libraries like XR Runtime are moving to Beta soon. The Android XR Developer Catalyst Program offers early hardware access for display/audio glasses and XREAL's Project Aura. New APIs are available for creating and testing augmented reality apps for audio and display glasses. Jetpack Compose Glimmer gets improvements like Google Sans Flex and new interactive components. Beta transitions are underway for XR Runtime and SceneCore, featuring a modern Kotlin architecture. The update introduces native glTF support in Compose for XR and a Geospatial API preview for wired XR glasses. Developers are encouraged to explore documentation, samples, and experiments to build XR experiences. The Android XR Engine Hub is introduced. The Android XR Developer Catalyst Program is open for applications to provide access to pre-release hardware.
