Use Gemini to interact with PDFs in Google Drive’s overlay file previewer

Google Drive has integrated Gemini into its overlay file previewer, allowing users to seamlessly switch between multiple files while leveraging AI capabilities. This integration improves the viewing experience when reviewing PDFs from Drive. With Gemini, users can get a quick overview of long, complicated PDFs, use PDF contents to create new documents, and summarize files in @-folder. To access Gemini, admins need to turn on smart features and personalization for their users in the Admin console. End users can access Gemini by double-clicking on a PDF from the Google Drive file list and clicking on the "Ask Gemini" button in the top right corner. When Gemini was initially launched, PDFs viewed in Drive opened in a new browser tab, but with this update, the default behavior will open a file in the overlay file previewer. Users can update their PDF opening default behavior in their Drive settings if they prefer PDFs to open in a new tab by default. The rollout of this feature will start on January 9, 2025, and will be available to Google Workspace customers with specific add-ons, including Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, and Gemini Education. The feature will be fully rolled out within 1-3 days for feature visibility. Users can visit the Help Center to learn more about using Gemini in Drive to work with PDFs.
