Vision Pro Future Uncertain as All Headset Development Is Seemingly Paused

Apple has reportedly paused development on both the Vision Pro 2 and the lower-cost Vision Air headsets. This decision signals a significant pivot in the company's strategy for spatial computing. Initial plans for a cheaper, lighter Vision Air to broaden market appeal have also been halted. Instead, Apple is redirecting resources towards developing smart glasses. The original Vision Pro, launched at a high price point, faced slower-than-anticipated enthusiasm. Reports suggest that engineering efforts have shifted to accelerate the smart glasses project to better compete with rivals like Meta. While production of the first-generation Vision Pro has ceased due to weak demand, a refreshed model with updated M5 chips and a new headband is expected soon. This M5 Vision Pro will likely serve as a stopgap measure. It will keep the current hardware relevant for a few years without substantially altering the user experience. The company's long-term vision for spatial computing now appears to be leaning away from bulky headsets. Apple's focus is clearly on a future iteration of wearable technology with its upcoming smart glasses. It remains a possibility that headset development could resume after the smart glasses are established.
