Walmart to Begin Accepting Apple Pay in U.S. Stores

Walmart has announced it will begin accepting tap-to-pay options like Apple Pay in select U.S. stores starting August 24. This move signifies a shift for the retail giant, which had previously resisted these payment methods. The company plans a full rollout to all U.S. stores by the end of 2026 and to gas stations by mid-2027. This decision comes after years of prioritizing its own Walmart Pay system, which uses QR codes. Walmart stated its goal is to offer customers more choices in how they pay. Other major retailers have already adopted tap-to-pay technology in recent years. The new support will include payments made with physical credit and debit cards. Apple Pay, for instance, offers enhanced privacy by not sharing actual card numbers. Existing payment methods, including Walmart Pay, will continue to be available. Walmart has already implemented tap-to-pay in its Canadian stores since 2020.
